Most Fridays, I post a prayer circle on my Facebook page where I share my weekly prayer and invite you to post your prayer requests so I can pray with you. Tonight is the longest lunar eclipse of this century. I’d like to dedicate a prayer for world peace for the 103 minutes the eclipse is predicted to last. If you’d like to join me, simply say a prayer for world peace as you’re reading this and we’ll intend for our unified prayers to play on auto-repeat during the eclipse.
During a lunar eclipse the Moon passes into darkness directly behind the Earth, and the full Moon, Sun and Earth align. On this day in history, the particular angle and distance of the moon passing through the darkness is making the journey longer.
According to NASA, these astronomical events don’t have any effects on us unless it’s purely placebo. But those sensitive to energy can feel subtle side effects from the moon’s travels.
I used to believe the hype of eclipses, that they held metaphysical power to incite major shifts in one’s life. After seeing one eclipse after another and no obvious major transformations, it’s evident to me that eclipses aren’t magic wands. But they become something extra special when we use the opportunity to boost our spirituality and nurture ourselves. The eclipse itself holds no power. The power lies in what God is trying to tell us.
Are you feeling irritable? God may be asking you to recharge your batteries.
Are you feeling tired? God is lovingly asking you to get more rest.
Are you feeling energized? God may be asking you to focus on that project you’ve started, or get some fun exercise.
Are you feeling sad? God may be saying it’s time to let go of the past and try your best to embrace the blessings you have right now.
Are you feeling angry? God may be asking you to use that as fuel to create the healthy change you’ve been wanting.
Are you feeling bloated? That may be a side effect of the moon’s gravitational pull. It may also be God’s way of encouraging you to soak in a few cups of Epsom salts with a few drops of your favorite calming essential oil!
Difficulty sleeping? Now that’s no placebo effect. Studies have shown that lunar cycles do disrupt some people’s sleep, science just hasn’t figured out why yet. It may have something to do with changes in melatonin affecting biological clocks and the sleep/wake cycle. I usually feel annoyingly wide awake on full moon nights, and have taken sleep aids like melatonin to help me sleep.
Eclipses: A Wonderful Excuse for Self-Reflection
Events that happen out in space inspire us to look inward. We’re reminded that we’re just another planet spinning in a galaxy among galaxies. Why not use these fascinating events to inspire positive change and healing? Life can be so busy and distracting, what if an eclipse gives you the perfect excuse to sit and meditate for 10-minutes, pray about something on your mind, or change your perspective?
Healing Meditation for Eclipses
Imagine dropping all of your worries and problems into a bright, shining star. Now imagine that star running out of nuclear fuel, your worries and problems flowing into its core. Eventually, the core becomes so heavy with your worries that it cannot withstand its own gravitational force. The core collapses, and your worries explode into nothingness. Bring your attention to your solar plexus, apply light pressure with the palm of your hand. Inhale deeply, then exhale. Release your hand, and relax.
Lord, you know what my soul longs for but I’m going to tell you anyway because I want to be very clear myself. I feel very strongly about ____________________________ (state whatever it is). If I am on the right path, please show me signs, and the next steps I am meant to take. Connect me to helpful people and opportunities to make this dream come true. I know timing isn’t always revealed but if it helps my soul to know, please give me a sense of when this dream may become my reality (notice if you have any visions, thoughts or feelings pertaining to seasons). God, I align my will with yours and I trust in your plan. Thank you for loving me and comforting my soul. Amen.
